Liminal Creation

This spread was my individual contribution to Cake Magazine. Cake Magazine was a semester long project completed by the 2015 Information Design graduating class. The goal was to create an entire magazine from start to finish. Each student completed their own article for the magazine.

My article connects the theory of liminality to the field of information design. I think that it is important that people understand that transforming information is a process. Transforming information in a meaningful way takes time and consideration. It involves mourning the past, and celebrating the future.

The lightbulb image started out as being a charcoal drawing that was transformed into a digitalized format using Adobe Illustrator. The block diagram was also designed using Adobe Illustrator. The article was formatted using Adobe InDesign. The basic design elements (colours, fonts, and layout) followed a style guide designed by the Cake Magazine style guide team.

Cake Magazine was launched in November 2014.

Matryoshka Coffee Table Book

This book was completed in a class on document production. I have always enjoyed Matryoshka dolls, and I thought it would be a great idea to use them in designing a coffee table book. I personally photographed the doll photos and edited them using Adobe Photoshop. I selected an appropriate famous quote to go with each image. The book measures 5in x 5in and it was hardcover bound. The document was complied using Adobe InDesign. The front cover image was designed using Adobe Illustrator.

Completed April 2014.

Formal Document Mockup

This parent guide was a semester long client project. The purpose of the project was to take the Child Care Centre’s old guide and remake it into something more functional and aesthetically appealing. The new guide was to follow column, grid, character, and paragraph styles (just to name a few) in order to bring order and hierarchy to the document. This project was also intended to further expose students to larger-scale projects and client work.

Colour was used as a way to divide sections of the parent guide. This makes it easy for users to flip through the pages quickly to find what they need.

The concept of the guide was “the building blocks of life”. The blocks, located on the title page as well as on the section start pages, help to both differentiate between the sections but also to remind parents that their child is in a centre that is helping them learn and grow. I wanted to divide the guide into sections with separate title pages not only because it helps with navigation, but also because it gives parents the option to look at the book section by section. The guide was created using both Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Completed December 2013.

Cats Magazine

This magazine was designed in a document production class. The primary focus for this project was document layout, therefore I do not own the articles and cat photographs. The front page layout and the back page graphs / cat vectors were designed using Adobe Illustrator. The document was complied using Adobe InDesign. The magazine is 5in x 5in and it was bound with a soft cover.

The cat statistics are from spring 2014.

Intercultural Communication Timeline

This project was to create a timeline showing the life of Edward T. Hall in relation to the development of Intercultural Communication. I divided the elements of this timeline into intercultural communication, Edward T. Hall, and world events in order to show correlation between the different events in time, particularly during the 1900s. This project was completed in Adobe Illustrator.

Completed March 2013.

Copyright Infographic

This infographic is a student guide to Canadian copyright laws. It was created for a faculty member at Mount Royal University during my internship at the Academic Development Centre. The infographic was made using Adobe Illustrator.

Completed May 2013.

Interface Design

This project was an interface mockup. The interface pitch is as follows:

The interface will aim to eliminate the stereotypes accociated with aging. Through an interactive interconnected graphic, users will be able to explore how values stay relatively the same as we age even though they might appear to be different externally. They will be able to see the connections between age groups, and explore contributor stories and images. Through interaction people will be able to more effectively visualize how our values have similarities both within our own lives, and within the lives of others which connects to the activity theory - people are likely to be responsive to information if they are able to explore and interact at their own pace.

The users will be walked through a series of questions to obtain knowledge about their values and demographic ages. The interface will divide into the contributed values, and a connecting diagram will be attached to each value. The connecting diagrams will display all of the images and stories submitted under a specific value. People will be able to narrow in and explore specific age groups, which will help them to better understand the process of aging and the effect it may or may not have on their values.

- Provides innovation as it will help to eliminate the stereotypes associated with aging through interaction (activity theory)
- Prolonged engagement as users are able to explore the content on multiple levels, and the interface leaves room for expansion into different topics or “questions”
- The interface is available on the Web, with the potential to expand to tablets or phone devices
- The interface leverages data from the contributing users. The interface also has the potential to partner with other external data sources including NGOs or post-secondary institutions

Completed April 2014.

Technical Research

This project was completed in a research class. The goal of the project was to analyze the visual work of Max Ernst and determine correlations between varying collages. The research included, tracking, recording, and correlating visual data. These charts were incorporated into a research report. The project also utilized usability by using troubleshooting skills to display a large amount of  raw data in a concise and understandable way. This project was compiled used Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Completed December 2013.

Typographer Spread

For this project the requirement was to research a typographer and determine their biggest contribution to the design community. My typographer was Rudy Vanderlans, one of the founders of Emigre magazine. The use of grids was an important aspect of this assignment. This project was constructed using Adobe InDesign.

Completed November 2012.

Tooth Town Instructional Package

This project was completed with a team of eight information design students. As a group we researched and designed an instructional package with both a lesson plan and a children's brochure aimed to help teach grade one students about oral health.

Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign were used to complete this project. Google Drive was used as a tool to organize content for the duration of the project.

Completed December 2014.

News Article Layout

The requirement for this project was to layout an online news article into two 11x17inch page spreads. The article I chose was on Malala Yousafzai, who was the youngest candidate ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

I do not own the news article or the image on the first spread, as the project focused primarily on layout (citations are at the bottom of the second spread). I own the image on the second page - it is a photograph of a life-sized collage made out of classroom materials.

Completed October 2013.

Sexual Assault Infographic

This infographic was created using both Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. This infographic highlights statistics on sexual assault in Canada. The concept of the infographic was that assault has a ripple affect throughout a person’s life.  All images were created using Adobe Illustrator.

Completed December 2013.

Fishing Infographic

This project involved using intercultural communication skills to create a "food" infographic. People largely connect through food and conversation, and this infographic was a display of how people connect through Eastern Canada fishing. The project was designed using Adobe Illustrator.

Completed April 2013.

True Believer Infographic

This infographic was based on Eric Hoffer’s book: The True Believer. The infographic uses the characteristics outlined by Eric Hoffer to describe Bhindranwale’s mass movement in the 1980s. All images were created using Adobe Illustrator.

Completed March 2015.
